Why do Census counts and Google Maps listings differ?
- The Census counts locations with paid employees. One-person businesses sit in a separate nonemployer count.
- Google Maps lists places, sole traders included. Anyone can add a missing place, and it shows publicly once added.
- Google profiles draw on many sources: owners, users, crawled web content and licensed data from third parties.
- Agents get their own listings. Google lets individual practitioners such as real estate agents have separate pages.
- Categories are not industry codes. The Census files each establishment under its major activity alone.
- A trade search returns neighbours too, such as a septic service beside the plumbers in a plumber search.
- Leadity counts what was scraped. Its customers choose the trades and areas, and a business found in two trades counts once in each.
- The dates differ: the Census SUSB figures describe 2022, while Leadity's Google Maps data covers 1 July to 30 September 2026.

What does the gap look like for one trade?
Remodelers run high. The Census counted 133,345 residential remodeler establishments in 2022, while Leadity customer scrapes found 425,907 bathroom remodeler businesses on Google Maps in Q3 2026. Overlapping categories, one-person remodelers and neighbouring trades in each search all add to the Google Maps count.
Electricians run the other way: 81,842 establishments against 17,565 electrician businesses, most likely because the count covers only the areas scraped (our reading), not because electricians are rare.
Read the two sources side by side, never as one count. The Census tells you how big a trade is. The per-search figure tells you how dense it is on the map.

How do you use these numbers to size a local market?
Start with the Census count
County Business Patterns gives establishments by industry down to the county and ZIP code. The Census says businesses use it to analyze market potential.
Check the density on the map
Businesses per ZIP search shows how many prospects one search gives you. Landscapers, at about 28.3 a search, fill a list faster than garage door suppliers at 10.3.
Count a few ZIP codes yourself
Search the trade in three or four ZIP codes and note what comes back. That is your own read, dated today.
Pick the trade, then the pitch

How we measured
Leadity's figures come from Leadity's Q3 2026 Google Maps data: businesses found by Leadity customer scrapes of Google Maps from 1 July to 30 September 2026, test accounts excluded, each business counted once. Read 20 October 2026. The 32 trades on this page hold 2,241,697 businesses.
Businesses counted is the number of distinct Google Maps places found for the trade; a business found in two trades counts once in each. Businesses per ZIP search is about how many businesses one Google Maps search anchored on a ZIP code returned for that trade in the window.
Limits: these are the businesses Leadity customers chose to scrape, by trade and area, not a census of all businesses. Google Maps misses businesses with no listing, and the 32 trades are the ones Leadity's customers have ordered, not a sample built to represent the economy.
Census figures are the U.S. rows of the Statistics of U.S. Businesses 2022 table by 6-digit NAICS industry, read 15 October 2026. We used it over County Business Patterns 2023 because it also counts firms by size. No 2024 County Business Patterns had been posted when we checked on 15 October 2026.
Full method: the size, read date and limits of every Leadity dataset are on how we measure our data.
